Louis Stern Fine Arts opens the exhibition American Color--a late 20th Century perspective reflected in works by 33 artists selected by Raymond Saunders.
The idea for American Color was born out of a conference held in Paris at the Palais de Luxembourg, in February 1994. "A Visual Arts Encounter: African Americans and Europe" was orrganized by Professor Raymond Saunders and Dr. Maïca Saconie of the Nouvelle Sorbonne.
Saunders had slated American Color to open in Paris in February 1996 as a forum where any American artist’s work could be seen as the creation of an individual, and not in terms of a particular ethnic group.
Saunders decided that due to controversies surrounding the Whitney Museum’s Black Male exhibition opening at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, American Color should not originate in Paris but in Los Angeles. The current exhibition will be a precursor to the Paris 1996 show.
Opening April 22nd and closing June 7th. There will be a reception held in conjunction with the other West Hollywood galleries on Saturday, April 22 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
American Color wiill be on view during gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturdays, 11am-5pm.
