There is something of the alchemist in Cecilia Z. Miguez. In her unique figurative sculptures, rusting machine parts are transformed into elegant neckpieces, small glass vials carry medicine anew and a miniature chest of drawers becomes a personification of the human heart. In each meticulously designed object, a myriad of lost items find themselves lending subtle and provocative life to Miguez’ sleek bronze forms.
Working almost exclusively with the figure, and her magical array of found objects, Miguez creates a language of gestures and silhouettes that communicates all manner of emotional complexities. Ebony colored bronze figures, arranged in casual compositions, incline their heads or drape their arms in a curiously intimate agreement. Silken-fingered beings with Kabuki white faces peer through restrictive wooden face guards, suggesting something infinitely more complicated than defeat or fury. Informed by a talisman from the past, Ms. Miguez’ creations reflect the challenge of the present in achingly beautiful detail.
The artist’s work is included in numerous private collections and in museums such as The Long Beach Museum of Art, The Museum of Latin American Art and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Montevideo, Uruguay. Louis Stern Fine Arts represents Ms. Miguez exclusively.
