Kristin Juarez: "A new way of seeing": Samella Lewis and a curatorial vision for Black aesthetics [YouTube video]

For this talk, Kristin Juarez will present her essay “‘A new way of seeing’: Samella Lewis and a curatorial vision for Black aesthetics,” in which she examines Lewis's curatorial work as a vital means to showcase an intergenerational community of Black artists within dynamic global contexts.

 

Kristin Juarez, PhD, is senior research specialist at the Getty Research Institute where she supports the African American Art History Initiative as well as academic outreach. Her research engages histories of collaboration and multidisciplinary experimentation at the intersection of visual art, performance, and the moving image. Her curated exhibitions include Blondell Cummings: Dance as Moving Pictures (2021), How to Be a Guerrilla Girl (open through April 12, 2026), and The Black Interior: Imagining Home in CAAM’s Permanent Collection (open through April 5, 2026). She is currently working on a collaborative research project on the artist, curator, and scholar Dr. Samella Lewis.
