Sanford Wurmfeld (b. 1942) is known as a painter, color theorist, and distinguished educator. His work primarily consists of scintillating juxtapositions of grids in gradations of complimentary and kindred colors. Wurmfeld was born in New York and studied at Dartmouth College. Following his education, he founded the Hunter Color School group of artists and Hunter College’s MFA program, teaching for over 40 years.
Wurmfeld has had solo exhibitions at Susan Caldwell Gallery, New York; David Richard Gallery, New York and Santa Fe; Galerie Denise Rene; Hunter College Times Square Gallery; Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase; Bard College; Edinburgh College of Art; Minus Space, Brooklyn; and Ewing Museum of Art, University of Tennessee, among others. He has been included in many group exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art; Long Beach Museum of Art; Minus Space; Akron Art Museum, and Allentown Art Museum.
Wurmfeld’s works are included in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pennsylvania; Sprengler Museum, Hannover, Germany; Espace de l’Art Concret, Mouans-Sartoux, France; Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum, Hagen, Germany, and Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), Buenos Aires, Argentina, among others.
