As part of the Los Angeles International, TRANSART Corporation will open an exhibition of works by the French painter Albert Bitran.

Bitran's painting contains a dynamic combination of gestural abstraction and draughtsmanship, effecting a rare spatial experience for the viewer. The observer participates in Bitran's painting in a nearly physical sense as the dense atmosphere of the gestural passages seem to envelop him. But the process is also optical, the viewer's eye tracing the geometry across the surface of the canvas. The latter experience is as analytical as the former is sensual, and thus the spectator is deeply engaged. In his examinations of the elements of painting, and its relationship to the viewer, Bitran's work plays in important role in the vital ongoing dialogue of Modern art.

Bitran painted his first abstract paintings in 1949, and had his first solo exhibition in 1951 at the Arnaud Gallery in Paris. In 1960 he exhibited at the Stephen Hahn Gallery in New York, and other exhibitions have followed in Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, and other major European countries. In 1992 he has shown at the Boer Gallery in Amsterdam, and the Johannes Schilling Gallery in Cologne. Also in 1992, a major catalogue was published on the artist,

Albert Bitran: L 'ceuvre 1949-1992, by Editions Ides et Cal en des, with an essay by Georges Borgeaud.

The artist's work is represented in major public collections throughoutEurope and the U.S., including: the Musse national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Musse d'art moderne de la ville de Paris; the Statens Museum of Art in Copenhagen; the Museum of 20th Century art in Vienna; the Contemporary Art Society in London; the Grunewald Center for Graphic Arts, University of California, Los Angeles; and many others.
