Cecilia Z. Miguez: New Work
September 16 – October 30, 1999
Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to present a solo exhibition of sculptures by Cecilia Z. Miguez. This much anticipated show will include all new work from the highly imaginative sculptor. Born, raised and educated in Montevideo, Uruguay, Miguez studied with Vicente Martín, among others, before moving on to San Fernando University of Fine Arts in Madrid. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Incorporating a variety of found objects along with her unique woodcarving and bronze casting, Miguez constructs figures who appear suspended in cosmic tension. In Truth Keeper, a bronze female figure stands on top of a chest of drawers. She is bound to the chest by constraints around her neck and thighs that in turn are wired to the drawers. A series of bronze weights hold the wires in place. The lowest drawer, the only open drawer, is labeled Truth. Though bound, this elegantly formed figure does not struggle, her pose steady, her classical face serene. What role is she playing? Does she hold the truth for us or from us. We think of ancient Greece and Cornell’s Surrealism at the same moment. This is a new mythology of the unconscious.
Miguez has been featured in many successful exhibitions in California, as well as Canada, Uruguay, and Argentina. Her April, 1999, exhibition at Galeria Praxis in Buenos Aires received acclaimed recognition in “La Nación.” This will be Miguez’ second solo show at Louis Stern Fine Arts.
There will be an artist’s reception held in conjunction with the other West Hollywood Gallery openings on Thursday, September 16, from 6pm to 9pm.
