Louis Stern Fine Artss i pleased to announce the opening of two solo exhibitions. Bay-area artist Judith Foosaner paints large scale, monochromatic abstract paintings; and Dan Abramson, the Los Angeles based artist, presses colorful lost paper collages with intimate detail. Both artists have extensive exhibition histories, and this show marks their first paring.
In Dan Abramson's "lost-paper” technique, only the inks are glued to the surface, the original papers are eliminated. This technique differs from other transfer print methods in that no solvents or print-making devices are used. Using a wide variety of source material from print media, the random color-to-paper transfers are freeley manipulated. The resulting abstractions, bold and rich in texture, are made more evocative by the occasional use of recognizable imagery and text. The compositions also successfully balance dark, heavy shapes against a background of fine ghost images. Abramson has previously exhibited at Louis Stern Fine Arts, as well as throughout California.
In viewing the works of Judith Foosaner, one can’t help but be aware of the painting process. In the artist’s own words, “I’d say that my struggle has been to find a process in painting which is as natural and full of inventive possibility as what I [do] in drawing.” In fact, her abstract paintings embody a perfect marriage of color, line, and space. Foosaner’s early experience as a dancer is evident in her sensitivity to the movement conveyed by line as it sweeps across the canvas and into deep space. Each painting is like a newly choreographed work, expressing new emotions and approaching space in a new way. Judith Foosaner has exhibited in galleries across the country, and is represented in many museum collections.
