David Stern: Recent Paintings
April 27 – June 3, 2000
Louis Stern Fine Arts is proud to present a solo exhibition of recent paintings by David Stern. Born, raised and educated in Essen, Germany, Stern moved to the United States in 1995 to get more in touch with the democratic modernity he felt the city symbolized. He currently lives and works in New York City.
Through the use of extremely heavy impasto, Stern presents his subjects as an amalgamate of perceptions and realities. The thickly painted works emote a sort of layered sensuality, while also showing Stern’s desire to completely visualize the emotion of the human form. The thickness of Stern’s work becomes lens, a method for seeing multiple perceptions at the same time. In Standing Woman (Sara), Stern does not try to recreate or represent humanity, but strives to give us an actual person; the anxiousness, the complexity and the kinetic presence of the individual.
Stern has been featured in many successful exhibitions in the United States, as well as Germany, Hungary, Austria and England. This will be David Stern’s first show at Louis Stern Fine Arts.
