BOTERO
Paintings, Works on Paper, Sculpture
From April 10, 1992 through June 6, 1992, Louis Stern Galleries will feature works by contemporary Columbian artist FERNANDO BOTERO.
Botero's highly individualized style has attracted a tremendous amount of attention throughout Latin America, as well as in the United States and Europe. His works, painting and sculpture alike, combine playfulness, satire, and a sheer delight in volumetric form. The resulting images are solid, substantial, and yet sensuous.
Botero takes on art history in an intelligent, perhaps "naughty", but never venomous manner. He draws from, has fun with, Piero della Francesca, Velasquez, Manet, Rubens, and many other masters. At the same time, they are his teachers. He responds to work which fully expresses its plasticity - how often he has spoken of his fascination with "the joy, the mystery, of plastic form." His two-dimensional work takes on the fullness of the third dimension, his sculpture is monumental.
Paintings, sculpture, and works on paper by Botero will be on display at Louis Stern Galleries during gallery hours; Monday through Friday 10-6, Saturday 11-5. Municipal parking is available adjacent to the gallery.
