Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to present Flights of Imagination: Recent Works by Cecilia Z. Miguez. The exhibition opens on Thursday, September 9 with an artist reception from 6-9pm and continues through Saturday, October 23, 2004.
Uruguayan sculptor Cecilia Miguez is dreaming of travel in this her fifth solo exhibition with Louis Stern Fine Arts. Angel pilots, inspired by Da Vinci and powered by delicate golden filigreed wings, soldier horses, readied for action by their tenderly painted wooden riders, and serene bronze maidens all seem destined for a journey of transformation.
Working with an assortment of found objects seamlessly incorporated into meticulously crafted sculptural objects, Miguez creates a detailed human landscape powered by something akin to magic. Weathered wooden boxes, functioning as pedestals, seem luminous when backed by golden screen panels. The singular figures atop them pause mid-gesture, caught in the instant which precedes the alchemy of re-invention.
By marrying the weight of the “old” found objects to the exuberant line of the “new,” Miguez delivers the present with heartbreaking eloquence.
Miguez’s work is included in numerous private collections and in several museums such as The Long Beach Museum of Art, The Museum of Latin American Art and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Montevideo, Uruguay. Cecilia Miguez is represented exclusively by the gallery and a comprehensive catalogue accompanies this exhibition.
