HENRI MATISSE DRAWINGS AND PRINTS

July 20 through September 30, 1993

TRANSART CORPORATION opens an exhibition of drawingsand prints by Henri Matisse. The exhibition will be on view from July 20 through September 30. There will be a reception at the gallery on Tuesday, July 27 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

This exhibition primarily focuses on two elements of Matisse's genius: line and form. In allowing the viewer to concentrate on works with a limited palette, the exhibition fosters an appreciation of the expressive potential of line, the most direct demonstration of an artist's personal calligraphy, his or her autograph.

Matisse's work has been especially celebrated of late, as a result of last year's major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. TRANSART's exhibition affords a more intimate view of the artist's work. Sometime in the 1920's, Matisse remarked that he did not really know how to draw, and so he decided to abandon painting for a time to devote himself to drawing. He developed a linear style that stripped the image of all but the essential descriptive necessities, and thereby allowed a spontaneity of expression perhaps unparalleled in Modern art.

Matisse's drawings and prints will be on view during gallery hours: Monday through Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturdays, 11am-Spm. Municipal parking is available adjacent to the gallery.
