Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe & L.A. Abstraction

Louis Stern Fine Arts presents the inaugural exhibition of paintings by artist and theorist Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, who lived in Los Angeles from 1980 until June of 2016.

Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe is an esteemed figure in the field of non-objective painting and a prolific art critic and writer.

Born in 1945 in the south of England and attended Tunbridge School of Art and London University before immigrating to the United States in 1968. He received an MFA at Florida State University in 1970. He moved to New York where he exhibited his first painting at O.K. Harris in a group show in 1971 with subsequent solo exhibitions in New York at Susan Caldwell, Paula Cooper, John Weber and Annie Plumb. His work has also been exhibited continuously in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.

Gilbert-Rolfe’s work is included in prestigious public collections, including the Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL. He was awarded several National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting and criticism as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting. He was the 1988 recipient of the College Art association’s Mather Award for Art Criticism. He retired in 2015 as Professor/Chair Emeritus, after 11 years as Chair of Art Center’s Graduate Art department with a total of 28 years on the faculty. Prior to that he had taught at Cal Arts since moving to California. His books include Beyond Piety (1995), Beauty and the Contemporary Sublime (1999,) and others. Art After Deconstruction, edited by Rex Butler (2012,) contains essays about his work as well as two essays by him.
