Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to present Judith Foosaner: Between the Lines. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artist November 2, from 6-9 pm and continues through December 14, 2002.
Time is an essential element in Judith Foosaner’s bold new charcoal and/or ink collage on canvas work. Interrupted lines cascade into cubes of other interrupted lines creating dazzling visual dialogues. Foosaner’s colliding shapes and spaces evoke a world where fury and beauty are irrevocably intertwined; the precision of Asian calligraphy meets the passion of contemporary expressionism.
Bearing titles such as Messenger, Triple Time, Meter Matter, Flight of Fancy and Surround, each piece seems to describe some form of mission. Swirling, diving, floating or stabbing, the lines exude an impatience for the freedom of the next move, the next silhouette, the next space between them. Though the meticulously controlled palette and the peculiar grace of form are constants in Foosaner’s work, this implosion of emotion and idea on canvas feels entirely fresh and achingly of the moment.
Based in the Bay Area and represented by Louis Stern Fine Arts, Foosaner has exhibited in galleries across the country and is represented in numerous museum and private collections including the Oakland Museum, the San Diego Fine Art Museum and Everson Museum of Art, New York. Foosaner currently teaches at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. Between the Lines marks Judith Foosaner’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
