Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to present two solo exhibitions opening September 9, 2000, 6-9PM: Judith Foosaner: Out of Line and Janice Mehlman: Light Waves.
Judith Foosaner “Out of Line”
Drawing from the great traditions of Asian calligraphy and gestural abstraction, Foosaner conjures a palpable sensation of motion and space within the confines of meticulously textured or layered lines. It seems the passion of Foosaner the visual artist is generated from the passion of Foosaner the dancer. As Ms. Foosaner writes, ”My work has always been about line and my line has always been about dance. Now something new is happening; the beauty of tango has set me on fire and is charging my work.” Foosaner’s lines curve, caress and dive through the canvas in a delicate interplay of shadows and light describing a viscerally emotional space. Based in the Bay area, Foosaner has exhibited in galleries across the country and is represented in many museum collections. Judith Foosaner is represented by Louis Stern Fine Arts and has been featured in previous gallery exhibitions.
Janice Mehlman “Light Waves”
“A photographer is a translator of reality!” Janice Mehlman writes. Mehlman’s unique vision of architectural structures translates the actual into the fantastical. The curve of an ascending stairway acquires the sleekness and fluidity of a curled shell. Structures made of cement, stone, iron or glass – fragments of walls, sections of pillars, bits of vaults or hanging walkways – cease to bear the weight of their very material. They take on a very different life through the eye of Ms. Mehlman’s camera. “My photographs depend upon real space, and it is from that space that I create these abstractions of light, form, and representation. The expressive character of the image is thus made more powerful.” A native New Yorker, Ms. Mehlman divides her time between New York and Italy and has exhibited her work in both countries for the past fifteen years. This is Ms. Mehlman’s first exhibition with Louis Stern Fine Arts.
There will be an artist’s reception on Saturday September 9 from 6-9PM. The exhibitions are presented in conjunction with the West Hollywood Galleries. The exhibition runs from September 9 through October 21, 2000.
