LUIS ORTIZ MONASTERIO
Small Sculptures
October 8, 1992 through November 17, 1992
Louis Stern Galleries presents the sculpture of Mexican artist, Luis Ortiz Monasterio (1908-1990). The show will contain bronze figures spanning the artist's long and productive career.
Though essentially modern in style, the works nonetheless are tied to tradition. The most clear. historical connection is to Pre-Columbian art, the figures seeming larger than life, beyond time and place. The subjects are often types; there are Espiritu de la ley (The Spirit of the Law), and La Victoria (Victory), stark figures meant to embody the nobility implied by their titles. But there are also specific portraits, Cabeza de Anita (Head of Anita), which express the individuality of the sitter.
Ortiz
Monasterio was fascinated by form, and the relationship of forms. Though fairly small in scale, there is a monumentality about these works, derived from fullness of the shapes, their assertion of themselves into space.
Ortiz Monasterio was born in Mexico where he studied art from a young age. He has enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., and cities all over Mexico. He died in Mexico in 1990.
Luis Ortiz Monasterio's sculptures will be on view during gallery hours, Monday through Friday 10-6, Saturday 11-5.
