Open Sentence: Works by Mildred Howard
March 4-April 22, 2000
Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition featuring mixed media pieces by Mildred Howard. The show will feature both wall pieces and environmental works, dealing with history, retrospection and personal experience.
Born in San Francisco to parents active in both local culture and politics, Howard developed her social voice early. Utilizing a variety of easily recognizable objects and infusing them with memory and identity, Howard’s work is a call to action. In S.S. (Slave Stealer), railroad tracks cross the floor from one wall to another. The tracks, with golden rails and painted ties, come from an unknown origin and end in a mirror. Howard summons for us the underground railroad, the freedom trains , the spread of African Americans through the US, the constant representing change, the push forward towards identity.
Howard calls for our engagement within the environments of her work. She sees us not just as the viewer, but as a participant in events both within the gallery, and outside of a solely artistic context. Howard’s work has been featured in successful exhibitions in New Mexico, California and Massachusetts. This will be her second show at Louis Stern Fine Arts.
There will be an artist’s reception held in conjunction with the other West Hollywood Gallery openings on Saturday, March 4th from 6pm to 9pm.
