Louis Stern Fine Arts is pleased to present Works on Paper: Selections from the Gallery.  The exhibition runs October 27, 2001 through January 5, 2002 with an opening reception October 27, 6-9PM.

With an elegant economy of line, she seems to lean her cheek against a softly hued basket of flowers.  Her gaze is steady and direct; her pose modest, knees tucked beneath her blue and white skirt.  Her calm soft face suggests an entire history of complicated humanity.  She is a disarmingly simple tempera and charcoal drawing by Alfredo Ramos Martinez.

In exhibiting a variety of works executed on paper, the gallery celebrates perhaps the most intimate and direct expression of the artist’s emotion.  In the bareness of drawing, the artist, as Matisse explains it, “gives simplicity and spontaneity to the expression which should speak without clumsiness to the mind of the spectator.”

The perfect, singular lines that caress every inch of Louise Nevelson’s reclining female figure, the abstract but intimate dance between lines by Judith Foosaner and the deftly shaded watercolors by Benito Martinez Creel create an immediate accessibility to the viewer.  The artist’s private eye has gone public and the viewer has entered into a highly personal and emotional universe.
